Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
A highly effective and evidence-based treatment approach designed to help children overcome anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
What is SPACE?
SPACE is a parent-based treatment developed by the Yale Child Study Center. It is unique in its focus on reducing family accommodation of a child's anxiety as the centerpiece of the intervention. Instead of directly treating the child, SPACE empowers parents to make changes to their own behavior to support their child's journey towards coping with anxiety. The overall goal is to decrease family accommodation and enhance parental support, ultimately restoring the child's autonomy and improving their self-regulation and coping skills indirectly. SPACE is uniquely suited to treat anxious children who are unwilling, or unable to participate in individual therapy.
Effectiveness of SPACE:
A randomized controlled study found that SPACE is as efficacious as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the established standard of care for childhood anxiety disorders. The study showed that SPACE resulted in significantly greater reduction in family accommodation compared to CBT.
