Performance Anxiety Therapy
Understanding Performance Anxiety and Effective Treatment Options
What is Performance Anxiety?
Performance anxiety is similar to general anxiety in many ways. Our “fight or flight” response is triggered when our brain perceives something as dangerous. This response is readying the body for action to avoid the danger. This can create feelings such as racing thoughts, increased heart rate, sweaty hands, etc., that we call anxiety. Performance anxiety, specifically, is this anxiety response in preparation for or during some event requiring you to perform. This could be anything from a sporting event to theater to a work presentation. Now, this anxiety is normal and even beneficial until it starts hindering your ability to do the things you want.
Treating Performance Anxiety
Several approaches to counseling, including cognitive-behavioral, have been found to be very effective in treating performance anxiety. These therapy modalities can help the client understand their anxiety, learn coping skills such as breathing techniques or visualization, and more.
If your performance anxiety is beginning to hinder you from chasing your dreams, starting therapy can be a great step in helping you to chase those goals unhindered.
